Description

Learn about the inspiring story of Bob Marley! The man who moved the world with his music.

Little Bob grew up on the sunny, Caribbean Island of Jamaica. Born to a Black mother and white father, life could be difficult, and he was often bullied for the colour of his skin. But Bob didn't let others' unkindness harden his heart, instead he dreamed of a world where everyone felt they belonged. At twelve years old, he moved to Kingston and fell in love with ska--a style of popular music indigenous to Jamaica. Over the next few years he wrote songs, took singing lessons and played as much as he could with his newly formed band, Bob Marley and the Wailers. A year after their first hit single, Bob was introduced to Rastafari, a Jamaican religion and political movement. Driven to spread Rastafari beliefs, Bob and his band began to create Reggae, using their lyrics and melodies to fight for social justice and advocate for peace. Before long, his songs were spreading a message of unity across the world . . .

Bob Marley is a cultural icon whose work and message remains evergreen. His story shows the power of music as a force for good and the joy to be found when we open our hearts to others.

This powerful book features quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the musician and activist's life.

School Library Journal

Toddler-Gr 1--A board book biography of a musical icon and renowned reggae artist. From his upbringing with his mom and family in the countryside of Jamaica, Bob Marley found comfort in music and playing instruments. During his childhood, he moved from rural Jamaica to the city where he was exposed to different types of music such as ska and reggae, which eventually inspired him to pursue a musical career and start his own band that later on became the famous Bob Marley and the Wailers. Social and political turmoil takes Marley to exile to England, where he strengthened his musicality and career as well as his politics and social views. Like other titles in the series, this work doesn't go in-depth into Marley's life but provides a glimpse and sparks curiosity to learn about his life and music and listen to his tunes. He exemplifies how songs and music can be comforting in the face of struggles and also as a conduit for sharing emotions, social injustices, and historical narratives. The bold and playful illustrations capture the diverse people and landscapes in Jamaica--the countryside, the beaches, and the city--as well as the soundscapes of those areas. Images of musical notes run through the pages, as if guiding and following Marley around his life. A short time line and photos are included in the back matter. VERDICT A recommended purchase for collections that want to enhance their biography collection or where this series is popular.--Sujei Lugo
