Reading Level: 4th − 5th Grade
Series: Sea of Gold

In the tradition of Treasure Island, an unlikely young pirate races a band of devious rogues to a hidden fortune in Sea of Gold, the first book in a middle-grade series by New York Times bestselling author Gregory Mone.

Twelve-year-old Fish--nicknamed for his skill as a swimmer--never intended to become a pirate. For starters, he's just a kid from a poor farming family, and second, he absolutely hates to fight. But after his parents send him to work as a courier, one of his deliveries is stolen, and as Fish hurries to get it back, he's captured by a ship of scalawags. And the mysterious package? It's the key to locating the Chain of Chuacar, a legendary treasure.

Swabbing the deck of the Scurvy Mistress, Fish will have to earn the trust of the fortune-obsessed captain and learn the ropes from the rest of the crew, including a boy encyclopedia on all things piracy, a tough-as-nails young thief, and a fearless girl with knives up her sleeves. Yet with mutiny on the horizon and a ruthless first mate testing him at every turn, Fish isn't sure he'll survive, let alone find the Chain. Armed only with wit, courage, and determination, Fish leads his new friends in the fight of their young lives and a hunt for hidden gold.

A rousing yarn.

Publishers Weekly

Seafaring shenanigans await in this rollicking historical adventure by Mone (the Atlantis duology). When his struggling Irish farm family falls into dire financial straits, 11-year-old Fish, nicknamed so for his love of swimming, is sent to work for his merchant uncle. A botched delivery unexpectedly plunges Fish into a life of piracy aboard the Scurvy Mistress, where he must contend with an abusive bully named Scab and adjust to a eating gruel and hardtack, and enduring serious smells. Fish soon bands together with other kids on the ship, including Nora, the cook who longs for better ingredients than the ship can offer; Nate, who dreams of becoming a notorious pirate captain; and Daniel, a booklover whose land sickness prevents him from leaving the vessel. Together, the four tweens are swept away on a hunt for long-lost treasure, with mutiny and surprise enemies following closely behind. Rhythmic prose ("As the boarders brandished their blades and pistols, dozens of... men burst out from closed doors and hatches, firing guns and swinging steel"), humorous banter, and brutal depictions of pirate life abound in this traditional high seas romp. Painstakingly detailed b&w illustrations by Pekmezci feature throughout and include a map of the Scurvy Mistress. Ages 8-12. Agent: Alex Gehringer, Bright Agency. (Aug.)
