Reading Level: 4th − 5th Grade

Make choices to defeat a mysterious sea monster in the first of a new series of innovative, interactive graphic novels from the award-winning creator of Meanwhile.

Adventuregame Comics is a new series of interactive graphic novels in the vein of Jason Shiga's hit graphic novel Meanwhile. Readers follow the story from panel to panel using tubes that connect them, and sometimes the path will split, giving readers the chance to choose how the story unfolds.

Leviathan is set in a medieval coastal village, where residents live in fear of a giant sea creature. Your goal as a reader is simple: defeat the Leviathan! As you wander through the open world, the town's backstory is revealed. You can attempt to visit the library to try and learn why the Leviathan destroyed it years ago. You can stop by the castle to discover the town was once riddled with crime and theft--and how that's stopped as the Leviathan will wreak havoc on the town for the smallest misdeeds. If you're lucky, you may find your way to the old wizard who may possess the one thing that could keep the Leviathan at bay. But not everything is as it appears in this village. Can you discover the secrets and stop the Leviathan before it's too late?

Starred Review

This ambitious graphic novel by Shiga (the Demons series), reminiscent of early 2000s web browser games in which players facilitate their own unique story lines through a series of choices, features an unnamed, pony-tailed protagonist seeking the power to control a frightening sea monster. Operating as the hero, readers must decide what to do about the monstrous Leviathan terrorizing the waters beyond the protagonist's coastal village, while navigating varying obstacles, which includes obstinate and change-resistant locals. One path leads toward the Starlight Wand, an ancient and mysterious power that can control and, if necessary, defeat the Leviathan. Various choices, including specific conversational responses, examining items, and traveling from one area to another beget one-of-a-kind story progressions, and purposeful narrative dead ends and visually twisty pathing occasionally disorient. Information seeded across locations and dispensed by characters becomes meaningful later, as when a visit to a specific locale nets an answer to unlock an otherwise restricted area. Shiga uses wiry ink and a blue-hued palette to depict a moody environment, while clever dialogue and stout character design impart good humor, expertly composing extraordinary tales that interrogate the lengths to which communities will go to maintain the status quo. Ages 8-12. Agent: Daniel Lazar, Writers House. (Sept.)

Gr 3-7--In this engaging pick-your-path style graphic novel, readers embark on a daring quest to rescue a medieval seaside town from a legendary monster. An introductory note explains how to navigate the story, which includes following panel to panel using a series of tubes, which occasionally split. Readers then begin encountering various challenges and obstacles, including disagreeable and unhelpful local residents. As the story progresses, the white-presenting, pony-tail-sporting protagonist learns more about the town's history and culture through visits to various locations such as the library and castle. Certain choices will lead readers to dead ends, while other decisions will prove to be the answer to puzzles found later. Cartoon illustrations are depicted in an atmospheric gray and blue palette. VERDICT This cleverly captivating and entertaining tale filled with amusing dialogue and interesting back stories will enthrall readers for hours on end, allowing them to test and hone skills of deduction and problem-solving. Highly recommended for purchase.--Olivia Gorecke
