Puerco Pizza (Leyendo a Pasos: Paso 2 Leyendo Con Ayuda Spanish Edition)

by Diana Murray (Author) Maria Karipidou (Illustrator)

K-Gr 2--In this translation of Pig Pizza, Puerco makes delicious pizza for every kind of appetite. The Osos have strawberries on their pies, while the Gatos have sardines. Puerco takes pride in leaving his customers satisfied. All except Tortuga. The pizza chef tries everything--pizzas with seaweed, snails, and even everything on them! Finally, the pig realizes the turtle's true wish and sits across from his friend for a meal. The yummiest pizza is one shared with friends. This sweet early reader centers around every kid's favorite snack and does so in charming Spanish-language rhyme. The cheerful illustrations of critters enjoying their pies are done in bright, digitally rendered art. Especially adorable is Puerco's waiter, a tiny mouse who carries the large pizza platters to each customer, while Puerco kneads dough near his stone oven. The large font is set against white space--even in the illustrations with a tan background, a white rectangle sets the text apart. The illustrations complement the simple story, making this a great choice for emergent readers. VERDICT A silly tale that is sure to engage beginning readers (and give them a craving of their own).--Shelley M. Diaz
