by Dany Aubert (Author) Eve Tharlet (Illustrator)

Reading Level: 2nd − 3rd Grade
A touching, helpful story that tackles the school anxieties that so many young children face when starting kindergarten. School is right around the corner, but Martin isn't feeling very excited to begin kindergarten. His little sister, on the other hand, wishes she had a chance to pack a backpack, play ball with all her friends, and have teachers read stories to her. He's so lucky! she exclaims. Gently, Martin's mother helps him overcome his anxieties as she prepares him for what school will be like. By the time summer is over, Martin is feeling more confident than ever that school is the right place for a big kid like him.

In Martin's fourth outing (earlier adventures include Will You Still Love Me If...?), the earnest bear is wary about beginning kindergarten. When his younger sister, Anna, repeatedly insists that she wishes she could go to school, their patient mother replies, "This year it's Martin's turn." In answer to his questions, Mom calmly reassures the bear that the school is big enough to fit all his friends, it's close enough that the family can walk there, and that he can play ball on the playground, tactically building his confidence until he finally acknowledges that kindergarten might not be so bad. Tharlet's timeless-feeling pictures reinforce the charm of this gentle tale, which closes with a final question from Martin--"And when Anna is old enough, can we go to school together?"--to which Mom gives a subtle, comforting reply: "I'm sure she would like that." Ages 3-5. (Aug.)

PreS-K—The first day of school is a stressful and anxiety-inducing scenario for young bear Martin. Martin's mother attempts to alleviate some of Martin's worries and reluctance by discussing all the wonderful things he will experience at school, from hearing stories to playing on the playground with friends. His mother is so convincing that even his younger sister Anna thinks he is lucky to go to school. This quaint and lovable bear family is so relatable; from Martin, curious and cautious, to his mother, the star of the tale, as she gently encourages his questions and provides cheerful explanations for the benefits of trying something new and making such a big change. The illustrations are colorful and warm, exuding coziness, which may help calm similarly anxious young readers as much as Mama Bear's soothing words do. VERDICT A good addition to any collection, this playful and sweet take on a universal event may help parents and caregivers prepare their little ones.—Kaitlin Malixi, Kensington Health Sciences Academy, Philadelphia
