Series: 50 States

Part of the best-selling 50 States series of books and activities, The 50 States: Fun Facts celebrates the people, animals, vehicles, food, places, and events unique to America’s 50 states—with a 24-piece puzzle map of the United States included to top off the adventure.

Did you know that Connecticut’s state insect, the praying mantis, can turn its head nearly all the way around? Or that every year the Iowa State Fair creates a 600-pound butter cow? Each colorfully illustrated spread covers a different category and features 50 boxes, each representing a state and describing in a picture and words one special thing it is known for. The categories:

  • Animals
  • Things that go
  • People
  • Places
  • Festivals and cultural events

“See if you can spot…” boxes challenge you to take a closer look and sturdy cardboard pages make this book perfect for little hands to flip through again and again.

The 50 States series of books for young explorers celebrates the USA and the wider world with key facts and fun activities about the people, history, and natural environments that make each location within them uniquely wonderful. Beautiful illustrations, maps, and infographics bring the places to colorful life.

A broadly inclusive invitation to crawl over our country’s history, natural and otherwise…and maybe dig a little deeper.

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1--Trivia about U.S. states is divided into five sections. Each spread includes tidbits on state animals, transportation, food, activities, and celebrations. The states are organized alphabetically, and the facts tend to wander off the beaten path. For example, where steamboats might have gotten a mention for Louisiana, tugboats are featured instead. Obscure festivities are highlighted, such as Colorado's Mike the Headless Chicken Festival and Minnesota's Gammel Dag Fest. Cardboard pages make this selection perfect for the younger set. Each state's box is a different hue than its neighbor, resulting in quite a color romp. "See if You Can Spot..." sidebars are interspersed. Ending with a 24-piece puzzle--a map of the United States--this is a great gift book. VERDICT A lighthearted and fun-filled ride through the United States, ideal for browsers or patrons embarking on a road trip.--Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
