Publishers Weekly

Originally published in the U.K., this collection of 17 animal stories selected by Morpurgo features a variety of authors and illustrators, including Pippa Goodheart, Geraldine McCaughrean, and Meilo So. Several tales originate from Aesop and Andersen, while others are drawn from Native American, African, Caribbean, and other folkloric traditions. Morpurgo provides commentary before the stories, inviting readers to compare and contrast them, and to consider how the tales might resonate in their own lives ("What would you do if someone like Jackal was trying to tempt you into trouble?" he asks at the outset of Timothy Knapman's version of "The Hungry Hyena"). The broad mix of voices and illustration styles brings a lively variety to the collection, while the stories are united by concluding morals set off from the rest of the text. Ages 7-12. (Sept.)

Review quotes

"Michael Morpurgo is a former Children's Laureate in England and best-selling author of hundreds of books for children. Morpurgo's enthusiasm in compiling these animal stories is quite evident, for he believes that sometimes children first experience an animal through legends, myths, fairy tales, and folk tales. These animal stories provide a fascinating bridge from human to animal; the stories delve into relationships we have with animals or with each other. Moreover, animal stories provide a backdrop to explain creation or, in other words, how things came to be. The seventeen stories reflect Morpurgo's range of story knowledge. Each story is retold and illustrated by a particular author and illustrator. The lively, bright pictures match the simple, easy-going text. The acknowledgements page provides details on the authors and illustrators. This book is a worthy addition to the children's literature genre. It readily demonstrates the value of community since all living things, both human and animal, belong to the circle of life and biological diversity. Besides the feel-goodness of the stories, there is the hope that a story can serve as a springboard to other stories or the seeking out of further information. Children will be delighted."
