Emma and her family want to try new things this summer. The first activity on their list is camping. Will this adventure be family fun or a family disaster? Emma is Deaf and often uses sign language to communicate. This early chapter book includes an ASL fingerspelling chart and a sign language guide.
K-Gr 3--In the newest installments of this series, Emma goes camping with her family and has a dentist appointment. The sign language fingerspelling guide at the beginning helps readers follow along, as fingerspelled words are integrated throughout the text. Emma, who wears a Cochlear Implant (CI) and uses American Sign Language (ASL), navigates everyday experiences where her CI plays a role. At the dentist, she worries that her CI might interfere with the X-rays, and while camping, she has to remove it to avoid water damage at the beach. Though some illustrations show characters using ASL, the signs themselves are not depicted in detail. Instead, the back matter includes images of various children demonstrating relevant signs from the stories. These early chapter books are ideal for beginning readers and provide a thoughtful introduction to the Deaf community, authored by a Deaf-blind writer. VERDICT Excellent additions to any collection.
