K-Gr 3--Zoya, a young girl with brown skin, is excited because it is her dog Coco's birthday. The brown and white dog enjoys spending time with Zoya as much as she does with him. Together, they make art and have fun creating things. To celebrate his birthday, Zoya wishes to make a special gift for Coco. She first attempts a yarn necklace, but the yarn keeps slipping. Next, she aims for frosting dog biscuits with white icing, until her mother informs her that Coco can't eat the icing. Stumped as to what she should do, Zoya eyes Coco's bowl and sets out to paint it gold. After some help from her mom, Zoya has made the perfect gift for Coco's birthday. This relatable story will have youngsters wanting to create right along with Zoya. Each page has one to two simple sentences containing many sight words children will know, along with pictures that facilitate comprehension. Illustrations are done in bright pastel colors, complete with some fun glitter to appeal to children who like to brighten things up. VERDICT This sparkly title is a recommended purchase for all little creators.--Tracy Cronce
