School Library Journal

PreS-K--The National Geographic Society takes concept books to the next level. In the first title, children are exposed to a variety of items of one color. They are then asked to identify everything of the featured hue on a spread and are given a related bit of trivia. The items are not always easy to find, providing youngsters with a good challenge. The pictures are bright and cheerful. In the second book, children are asked to identify what makes an item different and also how it could be described as the same. For example, the first spread features three markers and a crayon. The crayon could be singled out as the different item, but it is also lined up at the same angle as the markers. Fun facts are also sprinkled throughout, giving additional learning opportunities. Entertaining choices that will stretch young minds.--Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH
