The informational value is significantly enhanced by a robust "Interesting Facts" section and a glossary that defines terms like back-burning and arson. Wallace's striking watercolor illustrations utilize vibrant pinks and oranges to depict the heat of a volcano or a crown fire leaping through treetops. The visuals provide a necessary emotional contrast, moving from the stark, gray devastation of a burnt-out home to the lush greens and yellows of life returning to nourished soil. However, the quality of information is sometimes hindered by the book's format. The noticeable lack of text leads to abrupt transitions and confusing phrasing that may leave students with more questions than the book answers. For example, readers are told wildfires leave conditions like floods, eroded soils, and polluted air and water, with no explanation of how or why.
