Gr 2-5--In this sporty series addition, a fox named Frank is teaching a bear named Bert how to play soccer, and it's off to a not-so-good start. Bert kicks too high and the ball lands in some silly yet inconvenient places, like a couple's picnic and even on the back of a porcupine. Frank asks for assistance from another friend, local soccer legend Barbara, to help teach Bert how to play soccer, without getting too involved in the game himself. The charming illustrations, simple yet colorful and expressive, present the highs and the lows of learning how to play a sport. And yet, the story heads toward a much-needed lesson that everyone can play using their own unique abilities. VERDICT A fun story about friendship and learning how to play a new sport.

Chris is originally from Bradford, UK and studied illustration and graphic design at Bradford College of Art. In 2000 he moved to France where, among other things, he was an English teacher before working in newspaper layout and design. When his children were small he realized he loved the picture books he read to them, sometimes even more than his children did -- the Picture Book Bug had truly bitten. Chris has since written and illustrated several books and is currently thinking about the next one, probably with a cup of tea in hand at home near Limoges, France.
