Gr 4 Up- Celebrity chef Duff Goldman brings his expertise and sense of humor to this all-encompassing cookie compendium. With over 20 pages of tips, tricks, and "cookie philosophy," readers will be ready to bake by the time they reach the recipes. Goldman organizes the recipe chapters by cookie type, including the usuals, such as "Sandwich Cookies" and "Decorated Cookies," but also some unexpected categories, such as "Things with Cookies in Them'' and "Things That Are Sorta Cookies." Recipes include a mix of classic cookies; twists on old favorites; and "International Cookies" (Mooncakes, Alfajores), recipes that may be new to American bakers. Narrative sections interspersed with the recipes give more information on cookie-related topics, such as their history. Readers will also find instructional sections, including six pages on royal icing technique, at logical points in the book. Each recipe has a photo of the finished product and clearly states how many cookies it will yield. The book concludes with a glossary, measurement conversions, and a thorough index. VERDICT Whether or not readers know Goldman from his TV appearances, his personality and technical skills are evident throughout. With kid and adult appeal, this is a must purchase.
