★ .."A 28-page tour de force of a board book. . .it's pure gold." -- Kirkus, starred review

Whoop WHOOSH whoop WHOOSH click clack BUMP! Bright and cheerful illustrations come together with a giggle-worthy variety of noises in this rhythmic tale of a garbage truck's day. The illustrations provide young children with a truckload of opportunities to practice counting 0-5 and to work on beginning inference skills. The story rolls to a gentle close, making it a perfect bedtime choice for little truck fans.

If a garbage truck told a story, what might it sound like? Citro's titular character does just that, entirely with sound effects: "Rumble Rumble/ Shudder Shudder/ Rattle Rattle Vroom!" Cummings illustrates in thick, chalky lines, rendering the truck with googly headlight eyes and robotlike pincer arms. Along the way, the endearing truck meets other car, human, and animal characters and dutifully backs up to collect garbage from a pajama-clad man. A view of city blocks shows additional trucks making a commotion: "Whir! Bash! Zip! Flump! Slam! Whoosh! Zing!" Citro clearly knows his audience--in one scene, the garbage truck hunkers down, dumping trash from its rear ("Boop boop boop boop boop boop Whoosh!") before rattling off for a snooze in its garage. Ages up to 5. (Oct.)
