School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1--Topics from baby animals to weather are presented through colorful illustrations and limited text. "Expert Fact" and "Q&A" text boxes share extra details in smaller print. "Zoom In" challenges readers to examine the photos more closely to find specific details. Back matter includes an "Expert Quiz" that checks for comprehension. "Expert Gear" shows a professional related to the topic (a lepidopterist, veterinarian, etc.) with all their gear labeled. The glossary offers thumbnail images along with the definitions as another support for early readers. Photos throughout the series include individuals from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. VERDICT A useful collection for primary classrooms. The different levels of text make these books a good choice for paired reading--the young child can focus on the main text while an adult or older child reads the fine print.
