Not a great showcase for the artists, but sufficient juice to carry off a launch.

School Library Journal

Gr 2-5--Packed with facts about our solar system and beyond, this book's unique format consists of 10 large gatefolds that open into four-page spreads. Before unfolding, the outer pages of the gatefold provide basic information about a topic. After unfolding, the pages zoom in for a more detailed view. For example, the outer pages of the section describing the moon landing introduce the three astronauts and their activities on the moon, while the inner pages provide the history behind the mission, details of the landing, and later missions. Topics covered include galaxies and stars, the sun and the solar system, and getting into space. This book presents unique challenges and rewards. The text consists of short anecdotes on a range of subjects and contains a great deal of scientific vocabulary. The illustrations feature infographics such as illustrated time lines, diagrams, graphs, sidebars, and flow diagrams. These illustrations reward careful looking. It is up to the reader to synthesize this knowledge and reflect on it, allowing for deeper engagement and critical thinking. VERDICT This is a fine book for stimulating reading, thinking, and discussing information about space. While there is no introduction or back matter, a teacher or librarian could challenge students to create a note to readers, a glossary, and additional references to consult.--Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York
