Beatrix Potter Wrote Stories (Little Naturalists)
Reading Level: K − 1st Grade

Introduce your brilliant baby to children's author, artist, and naturalist Beatrix Potter.

Beatrix Potter had a love for animals from an early age, and she grew up drawing and painting them with amazing detail and accuracy. She was best known for her children's book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She lived in London for many years but used income from her children's books to buy Hill Top Farm in England.

While living there and in Scotland, she developed a love of landscape and flora, which she included in her artwork. In all, Beatrix wrote twenty-three children's tales, inspiring people to follow their dreams and care for plants and animals.

Kate Coombs' engaging narrative and Seth Lucas' captivating art teach young readers about this inspiring children's author and artist, encouraging little naturalists to Be Kind and Be Adventurous.

PreS-K--This installment of a board book series for young naturalists and poets simplifies the life of Beatrix Potter for the youngest readers. Coombs's straightforward text describes Potter's upbringing and interests with simple, though unpolished, rhymes: "Beatrix lived in the city with carriages and busy streets. Except when she bought a farm, with chickens, ponies, cows, and sheep." Each spread presents an idea that is juxtaposed by the idea that follows, which creates a predictable pattern of opposites. Potter's Victorian upbringing is set against her scientific studies and animal storytelling; her prim lifestyle is contrasted with her training of mice. Large and accessible illustrations accompany the text. Young readers will find the character's expressions both delightful and endearing. Spare backgrounds help to focus the main images from the text, and a limited color palette amplifies this design choice. There is no back matter or source material included; those seeking a more comprehensive biography of Potter should look elsewhere. VERDICT A basic introduction to Beatrix Potter that caregivers can share with the youngest readers.--Jamie Jensen, Wayne Cox Elem. Sch., Roanoke, TX
