Mundial, an international soccer magazine, compiles five comprehensive sections about footie in this oversize illustrated compendium. Opening with a handy glossary, the book continues with a history of soccer and the evolution of its boots, balls, and notable players. Lingo (a brace is "two goals scored in one game") and detailed how-tos instructing readers on iconic moves ("How to take the perfect shot like Ji So-Yun" and "How to take the perfect set piece like David Beckham") make this an interactive guide for aspiring players as well as fans. Trivia, celebratory gestures, and more follow, accompanied by colorful diagrams, timelines, and illustrations that emphasize the fluidity of the sport. Though Weighill's illustrations of famous players' faces are a bit simplified, each accompanying biography provides sufficient detail, featuring athletes from a number of backgrounds. An entertaining resource to pass to both readers well versed in soccer and those seeking to be. Final art not seen by PW. Ages 6-12. (May)

Gr 2-5--Soccer gets a lovely, lively, and thorough treatment in this oversize book. The text includes a brief overview of soccer basics and terms, followed by a surprisingly in-depth history of the game. A time line features regional details and cultural changes that contributed to the evolution of soccer. The U.S. Women's National Team is recognized as one of the greatest teams of all time. Many of the key players who transformed the U.S. team into a powerhouse are mentioned in different sections, such as "The Great Players" and "Weird and Wonderful." Sections highlighting outstanding coaches, massive stadiums, rad uniforms (or kits as they're more commonly known), and the envy-inspiring trophies are equally well developed. The "How To..." section is a standout. It offers step-by-step guidance through the most amazing moves in the game, like David Beckham's awe-inspiring set pieces, Luis Suárez's jaw-dropping nutmegs, and Didier Drogba's shockingly effective headers. A segment toward the end is dedicated to sportsmanship, coaching kids on the importance of respecting the officials, and being a responsible fan on game day. The playful art contains amusing visual details. VERDICT Mundial, a popular football magazine, provides an authoritative and light-hearted writing style that young readers will adore. Equally appealing for browsers and avid readers, this is a recommended purchase.--Abby Bussen, Muskego P.L., WI
