Farmblock (Abrams Block Book)

by Christopher Franceschelli (Author)

Farmblock (Abrams Block Book)
Reading Level: K − 1st Grade

Explore life on a farm in this addition to the bestselling Block Book series!

It's time to plant some crops, harvest the veggies, and make jam to take to the farmer's market! In this follow-up to Alphablock, Countablock, Dinoblock, Cityblock, Buildablock, and Marvel Alphablock, readers are introduced to what life is like on the farm. Like the previous titles, Farmblock explores a concept--in this case, seasons. From a rooster crowing at the crack of dawn to picking pumpkins for Halloween, there is so much to do all year-round! In keeping with the rest of the series, Farmblock features die-cut pages, gatefolds, and the charming art of British design team Peskimo.

PreS-K-Two children explore a farm and what happens there throughout the year, from harvesting corn to taking jam to the farmer's market. As they explore they encounter typical barnyard animals as well as activities such as composting and baking apple pie. Sturdy flaps are cleverly placed throughout the book, breaking up the story line and providing variety and interactivity. The book's rich vocabulary supports early literacy for young listeners, introducing words like dozen, paddock, slop, and grateful. Deliberate questions ("who is behind this door?") offer easy opportunities for conversation. Digital illustrations are bright and colorful, and include people of different races, abilities, and ages. VERDICT Sure to be a crowd-pleaser for individual and small group sharing. A must-add to most collections.-Jennifer Knight, North Olympic Library System, Port Angeles, WA
