Gr 4–8—This series will appeal to readers who enjoy a graphic style and a layout similar to DK's "Eyewitness" books. A diverse cast of engineering characters in hardhats and lab coats explores topics such as architecture, medical technology, and various forms of transportation. Text is laid out with a paragraph about the main topic, with smaller, related portions placed around the page's edge. Occasionally, a "Fascinating Fact" or "Can You Believe It?" statement is added. Developments in each field are traced from historical examples to current practice, such as early beam bridges of wood and stone and recent bridge-tunnels that free up shipping lanes or air traffic areas.
